Cultivate an Attitude of Gratitude

There is a lot of research being done out there on things like happiness and gratitude these days (thank goodness as they once only studied anxiety, depression, and all the other more negative states!)

Robert A. Emmons of the University of California, and Michael E. McCullough of University of Miami, conducted pioneering experiments at the University of Miami. They instructed people to keep a journal listing five things for which they felt grateful, like their spouse’s love, their child’s health, watching a sunset.  They just one sentence for each thing and they only wrote once a week.

What they discovered was after two months, the people keeping the gratitude journal were significantly happier and more optimistic than the control group, and they spent more time exercising and had fewer physical complaints.  Other research shows that people who cultivate an attitude of gratitude are happier, sleep better, are kinder toward others, and have more life satisfaction.


Gratitude is so important in Law of Attraction work because the fundamental concept is that our consciousness is the cause of our reality and not the other way around.  So we must always begin at the end.  We have to celebrate before the victory and feel gratitude before we receive whatever it is we want.

People who really live in gratitude see amazing things show up in their lives because they attract more things for which to be grateful simply by living from that place.  So gratitude is not something just for Thanksgiving.  It’s a way of being in the world: it’s living in a state of appreciation, and having a friendly, compassionate stance towards whatever shows up.
  Being in gratitude is a key to manifesting what we desire.  So often we wait for something great to show up in our lives and then we feel gratitude. But if we meet our desires with an open heart, peacefulness, and gratitude rather than a feeling of lack, we can attract to us all of our desires with effortless ease.

Let go of the need to tackle your desires to the ground or chase them around the world. Instead start from a place of true gratitude for all that you have already.  For example if you are desiring wonderful partnership, think about the partnerships you already have to feel grateful for, perhaps your co-workers, your parents, siblings or friends.  You also can be grateful for your partnership with the Field/the Divine.  Start with all that you have in form that resembles that which you desire.  This is truly the fastest route to manifesting.  Of course you must do it not to receive but because of the inner joy it brings you.

  Here are a few things you can do to cultivate an attitude of gratitude and reap the many benefits.

  • Keep a gratitude journal for the next two months…  Just write one sentence for each of five things for which you are grateful.
  • Take a released stance regarding anything you want in your life and meditate on feeling gratitude about already having received it.
  • Take time to write a long letter to someone you love about all the things you appreciate about them.  Then read it to them aloud.
  • Send cards to all the people who are important to you and tell them so.
  • Take time each morning when you awake to go through all the things that you are grateful for in your life.
